The dress was an idea that popped into my head and my last ever project on my foundation course enabled me to create whatever i wanted.
I have always had a fascination with the character miss Havisham the elderly woman from Charles Dickens classic novel Great Expectations. A woman scorned by the man she loved. left at the alter on her wedding day and who forever more decayed within her wedding dress, surrounded by the rotten mess that was her wedding feast. I liked the idea of creating the dress decaying.
I bought a second hand plain wedding dress took it apart coffee stained it and burnt it. I added embroidered quotes from the play on the seems and around the edges of the dress. I used applique and reverse applique along with embroidery to create moths and rotten fruit all over the dress. I also used puff paint to create a rotten effect to the dress. It was a completely experimental piece but it was one of the most fun pieces i have ever created.
below are a few close up images.
